Former US Senator George Mitchell was the United States Special Envoy for this area (which is not really a separate country). For his efforts he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and nominated for the Nobel Prize. There are still complex problems in this area, but clearly things have improved. The ill-fated RMS Titanic was built here, by Harland and Wolff shipbuilders!
